Hello! We’re Johnathan, Todd, Will, and Luke, the creators of the GameFormuLab YouTube channel alongside the Science Squad. Having the privilege to enjoy video games with friends throughout our childhood, we’ve observed a surprising amount of children and young adults playing these games who seem to have incredible mathematical and scientific potential, as they have mastered the physics and gameplay strategies and algorithms their games require, but haven’t had the opportunity to pursue similar educational opportunities in their community. Even in our own New York neighborhoods, we’ve had plenty of peers without proper science education that are interested in STEM fields, but only have video game representations to satiate their needs.
This is why we created GameFormuLab in our freshman year of high school, continuing it with the Science Squad this summer. Four Forces is a grassroots science education initiative to get underserved teenagers interested and informed about physics and STEM concepts hidden in their favorite video games, and as we’re prolific gamers ourselves, we’ve been able to extract physics and math from well known video games such as Minecraft and Call of Duty. We aim to show students that may not have access to a formal mechanics or STEM education a world of opportunity in a pastime they may not have seen before: right in their game controller! In the midst of social media and digital entertainment, it has become increasingly difficult to engage young adults in STEM fields, but we hope to bring in a whole new wave of students into the STEM scene through the gateway of our YouTube channel.
This summer, we’ve worked with the Science Squad to create our debut episode to uncover the logic behind popular video games and fix their flaws through mechanics and mathematical modeling, and we’re hoping to continue with this series as we delve into features of games such as the flaws of vehicle mechanics affecting ballistics, the real mathematical capacity of your favorite video game protagonists, and the mechanics behind the rocket and grenade jumps. During the school year, we plan to continue with the Science Squad to put out as many in depth videos as possible, and even livestream on Twitch, where we can playtest the integration of physics concepts in online game lobbies with viewers. Check us out @GameFormuLab on YouTube, and check back to find us on Twitch! We hope to bring you the science education you want: the one that’ll help you win in video games!
