The Science Squad Symposium (SSS)
The Science Squad Symposium began as the Mecosta Osceola Science Symposium (MOSS), initially existing as an in-person-only experience. MOSS, the first science fair for middle and high school students in Big Rapids and the surrounding area, served as a venue for scientific exploration into a variety of topics, from statistical robotics to capitalistic incentives. The combination of research presentation and active problem solving was a unique combination that both engaged and challenged our young scientists.
As the Squad grew, we wanted to bring the fantastic symposium experience to as many people as possible, so we transitioned to an online model. Now, we've expanded to students across the US and Canada, and look forward to expanding further.
If you've completed a science project for any sort of science fair in the past year, your research is likely eligible for SSS 2020. Click the button to learn more!

The Summer Research and Outreach Program
The Science Squad is hosting a summer program during the summer 2023 for high schoolers to carry out a Science Education Outreach Project (SEOP) aimed at increasing scientific curiosity and education access in their community; all of these projects will be publicly available here by September 1, 2023. In addition, students are being mentored individually by undergraduates to begin a research project of their choosing. Students will be invited to present their research at the Science Squad Symposium upon completion of their projects.
The Lecture Series
Through YouTube Live, The Science Squad brings world-class professors and their research to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds for an interactive, conversational lecture. Lectures occur once a month, and last for 5-10 minutes. Topics range from the mathematical basis of musical harmony to political science to CRISPR biotechnology. Join us for this fantastic experience!
Outreach
We reach out to educators and students at the grassroots level. By visiting schools and connecting with teachers and principals, we hope to individually affect change. Some of our current projects include hosting a science educators forum and engaging local high school students with volunteer work. We seek collaboration with both educators and students, and welcome any suggestions.
The Lab Series
High schoolers across the nation can start Science Squad Clubs for middle or high schoolers in their area. We provide the lab plans which include questions to promote scientific thought and procedures for labs that are generally low-cost. If you have any suggestions for labs, please feel free to contact us. In addition, we always love to see our plans in action, so be sure to send us pictures of the labs being completed!
With the current COVID-19 situation, we are making all of our labs available for students to do at home. Some of these labs can be done simply with materials lying around your house. Please fill out the form below if you are interested in getting the labs and be sure to stay safe while doing these labs.
